Yesterday I am fairly confident that I saw a first winter male KING EIDER at Third Beach. I was sitting in my car eating at about 2 PM. I was scanning the water and kept coming back to a duck with obvious white patches near the tail. When I looked thru the scope I saw an all dark back, and the face was chocolate brown on the head with a blackish face, thin white around the eye. The bill was yellowish but at the time I thought it was too big for King. But after looking at many Common Eider today in all states of plumage, I am more convinced that my initial thought about that bird yesterday was correct. So I would love it if someone else sees that bird! If youre out that way for the owls, take a look
