Yesterday, I attended the 50th anniversay of Sultan Mohamed haji Hassan Gababa of the Garre community in Moyale, Ethiopia. It was a historic occasion attended by thousands of the community members from allover the world, and leaders from other communities in the region. The occasion was also a remembrance of the history of the community in the region, and its heroic struggles of its past leaders against the colonialists and opression during the reigns of Haile Selasie and the Dergue. I have always supported the view that communities ought to celebrate their culture and history so that the youth can appreciate their communitys past. The Sultan has earned respect from the community for his steadfastness, courage and patience in the 50 years he led the community in Ethiopia. I salute him and wish him good health.
