Yesterday I battled traffic around Nairobi, then headed toward Tanzania tired and frustrated. Just after crossing the border, as I passed through the town of Longido, I noticed a procession of Maasai folk converging along the road north of town. They were decked out for what was clearly the social event of the week. I turned around, and discovered what hast to be the most colorful marketplace Ive ever attended. Women and men in bright clothing and jewelery. Sales of everything from tire-sandals to cattle. Seriously cool. 50 km down the road, approaching Arusha, I was treated to a spectacular view of the foothills of Mt. Meru with black rainclouds towering above, but sunlight illuminating the mid-slopes. I had to stop again to just take it all in. I drove on through the rain thinking how lucky I was to live in such a place. Although Ive spent more of the past 4 moths sleeping in hotels than my own bed, Arusha is beginning to feel like home.
