Yesterday I completed my 4 week CERT training. It was informative, fun and a much needed experience in my life. The class was 4 weeks of theory and practical and a day of final review and stimulate practices. I didnt realize how unprepared for an emergency(small or large)I was until I took this training. I now have a much broader understanding of incidents and the rescue mission I see/hear reported in the news. Such as the 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and Sandy, recent gas explosions in NJ/NY, the Boston marathon bombing, etc. I learned so much, but heres a brief summary: I learned what a CERT team is, what an emergency contact list should look like and who should have it, how to sizeup my home and stablize me and my family 1st after an emergency, how to pack an emergency backpack and where it should be kept(i received this same information in my domestic violence class last year)how to identify the gas valve & emergency braker in my home, how to properly read & care for a fire extinguisher, how to deploy a fire extinguisher with a simulated fire, how to assess an injured person and triage minor injuries, how to conduct a search and rescue mission, how to properly mark a building before/after a search and rescue and the extreme importance of staying focused and with your team. The next CERT training starts April 28th in Chichester. The training is free and you must attend all 4 classes to receive a certificate. Contact Ed Kline to sign up 610-565-8700 or [email protected] You can tell him I referred you. Kudos to the Lansdowne Fire Company in Delaware County and Ed Kline for hosting this training in our area and the Delaware County CERT members/educators for doing an excellent job executing the curriculum in a manner that kept everyone engaged. You can also inquire at your local fire company for when the next CERT training will be conducted in your community.
