Yesterday I denounced the use of destiny as an excuse for lazy - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I denounced the use of destiny as an excuse for lazy plotting. Two more conventions should also generally be avoided. Taking destiny as the first, the second iscoincidence. I was educated at a Jesuit high school and one thing I learned was You only get to use coincidence once per story, so use it wisely. Ive long since quit reading Tom Clancy because he had an annoying habit of stretching coincidence past the snapping point. The third trope is The Chosen One, which has been worked like a galley slave in several books and by several writers. Again, it is often used as an excuse for sloppy plotting or to inject a religious element, or see point one. A really good writer can get away with this nonsense {particularly in comedies,) but most really good writers dont bother with such twaddle except as a challenge.
