Yesterday I divided Shadows (In the Country of Shadows is the full title) into parts. I know this doesnt sound terribly earth-shaking, but its a sign to me that the book has reached a certain mass and the writing will likely start to move more quickly now as I know what each part contains and the flow and trajectory of the book itself becomes much more clear. I do have the ending written so I have a good notion of the trajectory of the last few parts anyway. Ive written the ending of each book long before the book was finished, in fact with Mermaid I wrote it sitting on the roof of a cottage on Cape Cod one morning, long before I knew what the beginning looked like- the irony being that I was there to research the first chunk of the book. :) Anyway, its always a good feeling for me when the book divides as I know I might actually finish it and have it be something coherent (something that often seems in doubt during the writing process) and also that it has reached a certain point of critical mass. Its eight parts, in case anyone is curious.
