Yesterday I felt really sad by reading a news article in the local Marathi news paper “TARUN BHARAT” regarding a police complaint filed against a reputed gynaecologist of Margao for professional negligence. In my opinion this news article was an example of a irresponsible and immature journalism by such a reputed news paper like “Tarun Bharat” which amounted to maligning the reputation of the doctor as the news appeared disclosing the name of the doctor concerned though the charge has not at been proved and the investigation is going on. A patient is fully justified in lodging a police complaint against the doctor if he thinks that his patient died or suffered because of professional negligence of a doctor and police should do a thorough investigation and if found guilty the doctor should be punished. Professional negligence should not be tolerated by the society at any cost. But by saying that the society and the media should be very careful regarding some professions like doctors, teachers where reputation of the concern in the society plays a major role in discharging his duty and also for the well being of the society. In this case the news paper could have avoided disclosing the name of the doctor as it will harm his reputation and faith of the patients. There is a possibility that the doctor was not at all at fault in this case and the kith and kin’s of the deceased patient in a emotional turmoil has filed a police complaint without understanding the intricacy of the situation in which the doctor finds himself in such emergency situation. We should understand that a doctor is a human being and can make mistakes and is also liable for benefit of doubt in an extreme situation. It takes a long hard struggle for a doctor to build a good reputation in a society but just a stroke of a pen to tarnish it. A good journalist knows this and should execute maximum restraint in such situation and that is what we the common man expects from a news paper like “TARUN BHARAT”. I am an ardent reader of the said news paper and would like them to be more responsible and mature in future
