Yesterday I finally and grudgingly watched Star Trek Into Darkness. All I can say is... What the hell? I actually enjoyed it. Cant quite believe it myself. I SO hated the first J.J. Abrams Trek movie, and had heard such bad things about this one, that my expectations were lower than the linoleum. But yknow what? Unlike the first one, this was actually a STAR TREK story. Yes, a derivative, retcon Star Trek story with plot holes you could drive a bus through; but at least this time you felt that Abrams and the screenwriters actually sat down and watched a few episodes of the original show and had some idea of what made it tick. And mercifully, NO TIME TRAVEL. The first movie didnt HAVE plot holes, it WAS a single, never-ending post-it note STORM of plot holes. Not to mention scientific and astronomical illiteracy and complete disregard (verging on disdain) for the source material they were working from. There are still plenty of logical beefs with this movie, though: The ridiculous ease with which they waltzed in and out of Klingon space, transmitting up a storm to Starfleet the whole way through; the fact that at the denoument they were INSIDE THE MOONS ORBIT and it never occurred to them to call to Earth for help (even though they could transmit all the way to New Vulcan without trouble), the fact that Scotty has apparently invented a super-transporter that makes starships obsolete... I could go on. All to say, it was still weirdly enjoyable, and Im surprised.
