Yesterday I found understanding. I got a call from the National - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I found understanding. I got a call from the National Autism Society of Oregon. I called them looking for answers to some of my questions. The woman I talked to was amazingly understanding because she had two boy in the spectrum, each on the extreme opposite of the spectrum. What I got out of the conversation is that parenting kids in the spectrum is different from parenting the Nero typical child. I had been doing this instinctively but would and have been getting conflicting advice from professionals. I will trust my instinct. I also retrieved the conclusion that I am going to use professionals that are truly educated with experience with autism spectrum. I am sick of dealing with people who only have read about it in books and have an idealistic view of how to parent these children, especially the ones that are highly functioning. You can not do the same as with children who are nero typical. I got this call right after my appointment with the psychologist. I was direct with, how are you going to treat his anxiety? His response is expose him to more stuff. OMG, thank goodness Steve was there for support. We got done and my husband says, This is not our guy. That tactic does not work with kids in the spectrum. I am grateful for a stranger sharing her story and giving me information to look into for not only Mick but for our family. It was interesting to hear her description about here son who is highly functioning, as it is a lot of what we go through with bullying, education challenges, communication challenges and even health issues. Information is power if used to help and benefit others.
