Yesterday, I had a memorable Zoe Moment -and I couldnt wait until Therapy Thursday to tell you about it. I got to go to my Uncle Connies memorial service; he was my very first patient that I visited when I became a therapy dog. Mommy and I had visited him for over three and a half years at Life Care Center of Scottsdale, Health South, and/or the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center. He was Mr. Connie at first, but within a few months, he became Uncle Connie, and it wasnt too much longer that Miss Jill, his wife, became Auntie Jill. I was very well behaved and helped with the guest book, almost everyone stopped to pet me and ask why I was there. Sometimes mommy even stepped away to speak with some staff members who came to the service, and I never moved from my chair I think I knew that I had a special job- make everyone feel welcome, but more importantly to be with Uncle Connie for the last time. You might not believe this, but when we first got there, Auntie Jill was holding me and showed me where Uncle Connie was.The little blue and white ginger jar didnt look like him, but when I sniffed it, I knew he was there, and I gave the top of it a little lick. Auntie Jill said, Oh Zoe, you gave Uncle Connie one last kiss. He always asked me for a kiss at the end of each visit, and it was almost always on the tip of his nose. I think the best part of the afternoon (actually there were 2 best parts - can that happen? The best followed by the bestest? ) was when mommy got to speak about what a wonderful, caring and positive man Uncle Connie was, and then she read a poem called The Dash. Uncle Connies dash was truly inspirational as we all witnessed through Chaplain Tonys and Mr. Dicks eulogies. The bestest part was last - the ice cream social part - 3 flavors - Uncle Connies favorites - vanilla, coffee and mint chocolate chip! Auntie Jill said I could have some, too. On one visit, I got to share a spoonful with Uncle Connie - it was vanilla, so thats what I picked today! I enjoyed each lick of that tablespoon of vanilla ice cream. Yesterday afternoon was something mommy and I will always remember. I know Angel Uncle Connie is watching over me - and all of us! Have a nice day everyone - I will have mommy post a copy of The Dash ---Do you know it?
