Yesterday, I had a very rich conversation with a Cherokee man who knows his traditional values and culture. Me, the Cherokee man and a Cherokee lady shared spiritually and intellectually our thoughts of growing up in Oklahoma. The Cherokee lady was reconnecting to her culture after being displaced. She actually came from a strong line of medicine within the Cherokees. We joked after two hours of sharing that it felt like we had church. Even before this discussion, I had lunch and other rich discussions with a members of the Muscogee, Kiowa, Kaw, Iowa, and Navajo Nations. Through my work, Im finding many who are seeking understanding and at times respect for being who they are. Former Chief Mankiller was a well respected woman and a legend in her own time. We may not all be full blood or have been fortunate to be raised on a reservation but we all struggle and strive for fulfillment with living in two worlds at the same time. A respected Jicarilla Elder had told me not long ago, its whats in your heart that counts. I feel blessed to be able to meet and learn from the many tribes in our State! :D
