Yesterday, I had an interesting phone discussion with a person who took exception to an article that I had written in a “Letter to the Editor” a few weeks ago regarding the placement of Ten Commandment monuments at churches instead of schools and other public venues. The gist of his argument was that Christianity is now irrelevant and that Christians should stop attempting to force their obsolete or erroneous views of morality upon the rest of society. I have given some thought to his claims and I want to tell you WHY I believe that so many feel contempt for the historic and biblical basis for human morality. A church or any religious entity declines when those identified with it do not actually believe in it any longer. It seems absurd to claim that a person believes in a church or religion when that person rejects what that church preaches and believes. As our daily lives have become easier and more affluent and diversions of every sort more plentiful, church members are less willing to accept the authority of their pastor and less willing to worship a sovereign, holy, and demanding God. A God who dictates how they should live and prohibits a great many bodily and mental pleasures. It has been an easy step for many who wanted “freedom” from divine restrictions to accept the idea that science and evolution had disproved every bible claim. As a result, there is hardly any activity or “pleasure” that we may not now indulge and do so without censure, shame, or regret!! No attitude or practice, no matter how vile, degraded, or destructive is wrong since God has been dethroned. The true and only God, created humanity in His own image and bestowed upon him, not only, a body, but also, intelligence, reason, emotions, a will, a conscience and dignity. But that God has now been deposed. Now it is the creature who has created god. A god fashioned after his own fallen and degraded nature---a god that resembles himself…a god that allows every man to do that which is right in his own eyes. The display of the Ten Commandments for much of society is nothing but a shallow and nostalgic reminder of a God we once believed in—a God our Nation has no intention of either acknowledging or obeying.
