Yesterday I mentioned that two of my fears about life in Paraguay - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I mentioned that two of my fears about life in Paraguay seem largely unfounded on first acquaintance. Another thing I was afraid of was that Id miss culture, so tonight I was at the ballet to see what Paraguay has to offer. Id say the dancing was really good (because Im, like, totally an expert), and the costumes and lighting were great as well. But then there are certain things that remind you that youre not in one of the worlds great cultural centers. For example, the audience shouldnt actually see the stage crew setting stuff up behind the scenes. Also, if you dont have an orchestra and therefore play a recording of Vivaldi over the house sound system, you probably shouldnt turn it up so loud it starts to distort. But the big difference to Europe was the audience. Sorry guys, but if youre at a ballet, its not cool to be talking, sending text messages, arriving a half hour late and just walking through seat rows in the middle of the performance, etc. These werent a few isolated ill-bred individuals, this was a significant percentage of the crowd. Arts appreciation training might be a more urgent need in this country than training in the arts themselves.
