Yesterday, I met the Honble HRD Minister , Ms Smriti Irani, in the context of Australia-India relations. I, however, had the opportunity to discuss,at length, her vision and plans for Jammu and Kashmir. Contrary to the wisdom of the media, I found her engaging, articulate and open to new ideas. Unlike glib lawyers of the past who floated schemes without substance, she outlined a practical and inclusive vision for Jammu and Kashmir. For instance, she wants to have schemes for J&K similar to those for the North East where talented young school children are provided an interface with the best scientific institutions in the country through a scholarship program. Similarly, she wants the IIT (announced for J&K) to be a bridge between Jammu and the valley and located in a place which would be accessible by both students from Kashmir and Jammu. We also discussed various other ways to improve the quality of education in the state, and I found in Ms Irani someone greatly empathetic to the problems of J&K> I have always believed in judging people by directly dealing with them; one more reason for doing precisely this in the future.
