Yesterday I ran across two verses that seemed to say two opposite - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I ran across two verses that seemed to say two opposite things. Proverbs 9:10 says “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” but 1 John 4:18 says “there is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear. So if a holy reverence was somewhere in the middle, these two verses seemed to be on opposite sides of the spectrum. But then I looked up the original meanings of the Greek & Hebrew words and it all made sense. יִרְאַת in Proverbs=Awe, while φόβος in I John=terror, panic, morbid fear (where phobia comes from). Paradigm-shifting discovery. Awe and fear are very different things. Geeking out for the win!
