Yesterday I saw the lived poetry of my city. Today I see its shallowness. Visited 3 bookstores looking for a book of poems for 2 friends having their birthdays this month. At the first supposedly upper class literati store they had a total of 5 volumes of very modern poetry. Faddish in fact. The second had about 7 volumes, somewhat respectable, no classics, no contemporary laureates. As the book I wanted was a compilation of poems from mystics (several of them great women like the sufi mystic Rabia al Adawiyya) from various religious traditions, I looked in the inspirational/spiritual shelves. Except for 3 books by the Dalai Lama, there are no books outside the Christian tradition. 95% is Catholic. The other 5 percent is of the-positive-thinking-god-will-give-you-anything-you-want American BS sort. Heartbroken. #talesofthecity
