Yesterday I was chatting with a friend and recent graduate of our 1-year program. His story is spellbinding. I think about the hardships in my life, which leave most people cringing, and compared to what hes endured its humbling. Abducted into the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front at age 11 and forced to serve in the revolution until at the age of 16 until he finally escaped and headed for America. He hiked months from El Salvador through Guatamala and Mexico to the US border. He spent 2 weeks crammed behind a false wall in a container truck with 100 other people with only a loaf of bread and a gallon of water. He spent time in a Mexican jail. He crawled and swam across the border and made his way to LA....knowing no English. After some time spent as a migrant worker, He bounced around the country for years....in and out of jails. He eventually saved enough money to hop a plane to Baltimore.....where he lived in the terminal for 2 weeks when his uncle failed to meet him. He ended up in DC where he met a guy who knew a guy back to Baltimore.....and the rest, as they say, is history! :-)
