Yesterday I was deeply saddened when I heard the news about the Klabona Keepers: Imperial Metals Corporation, the same corporation responsible for the August 4th catastrophic dam breach that destroyed a whole ecosystem, was awarded an interlocutory injunction and enforcement order today against the Tl’abānot’in Elders today in Terrace Courts despite the fact that the Red Chris Mine blockade has been stood down for over a month. How can a corporation that is responsible for the worst environmental disaster in this provinces history not only be enabled to continue to operate with impunity, but again dispossess indigenous people from their lands and waters and further criminalize them for protecting the lives of future generations and an area that could very well be not only the sacred headwaters of BC, but also of Canada and the world. We need to change fundamentally. We need to recognize that their is no climate justice without social justice. We need to understand that injunctions are one of the many colonial tools in a box of unjust discriminatory laws. This system is not conducive for any of our well-beings as people have been awakened to on Burnaby Mountain... But, I hope that we begin to see beyond our own backyard to extend compassion outwards to those on the periphery geographically and socially - to those who have been oppressed since contact; I hope that this is a movement that continues to highlight the core of the problem as opposed to something that is me-my family-my home-my white environmentalist privilege status; I hope that the signs on the mountain reading not in my neighborhood change to no justice on stolen native land; I hope. In the plight of the negativity I felt yesterday are people whose hearts and minds permeate that feeling... People who see injustice and bring it to the worlds attention. People Im so proud to call friends. Thank you Marija Brzev, Xenoa Skinteh and all the other caretakers for what you did today, for holding down the camp for months while others were not yet mobilized to take action, for helping us all to be more compassionate creatures. Love you guys.
