Yesterday, I was driving up the parkway at West Ridge and I became overwhelmed with this thought – I LOVE THE CHURCH! Even though she exists in a fallen world, led by sinful, imperfect people (like me), she’s still the Bride of Christ! When her people are unified in heart, spirit, and purpose there is nothing quite like her! However, over the centuries and even today, she has been critiqued, analyzed, criticized, scrutinized, armchair quarterbacked, fought over, and split. I have seen expressions of her in large worship centers, huge cathedrals, stadiums, arenas, small auditoriums, living rooms, public schools, hidden basements, mud huts, beaches, and even under trees. I have experienced amazing worship services where her people expressed their love to God using Psalms, traditional hymns, southern gospel, bluegrass, rap, hip hop, modern contemporary choruses, African chants around huge fires, Jamaican Reggae, Russian liturgical, hard rock, soft praise, R & B, African-American spirituals, and gospel choirs! And regardless of where she exists, in what style her people choose to worship, or even how flawed she may be in our current world, she is still God’s plan to share His love with a lost world. She should still be the place where hurting, desperate, broken people, can go to find hope, acceptance, grace, and God’s forgiveness. So, after nearly 49 years of her being part of my life nearly every week, I still want to serve her with all of my heart. I still want to invest into her the best of everything I have to offer. Because at the end of the day, she is truly the hope of the world!
