Yesterday, I was joined by my parents and my wife Candace as I took my oath of office along with my 79 colleagues in the California State Assembly. I am incredibly humbled to be elected to represent the 17th Assembly District and look forward to making sure that Sacramento delivers for San Francisco on the challenges of our time, from housing affordability and schools to transportation and the environment. At the close of yesterdays organizational meeting, I introduced my first bill to authorize a $40 million annual state tax credit to assist with the rehabilitation of low-income rental housing that is in desperate need of refurbishment. With San Francisco and many parts of California experiencing intense housing affordability challenges, state government must do more to provide safe and affordable homes for our most vulnerable residents, particularly those residing in older SRO, special needs and rural housing projects. After six years fighting for affordable housing locally, I wanted to begin my time as a state legislator by continuing work on this important issue that impacts so many Californians. My deepest thanks to everyone who joined us last night to celebrate my first day in the California State Assembly, and for all the support you showed me throughout the last year that helped to make this a reality. I look forward to serving you all during the 2015-2016 legislative session, and making sure San Franciscos shared values have a voice in Sacramento.
