Yesterday I was reminded why the shop is here (aside the obvious trying to make a living). Mother and shy 13yo half-goth girl. Well - youll have to explain, said mother. Its about friendship issues blurted 13yo, now red-faced. No its not. says I - They are NOT your friends. Real friends would not bully you. You do not need them, and you do not need to change to be like them either. Its about you being DIFFERENT. They are SCARED of you, and that is why they bully you. Do you know what? KEEP THEM SCARED, all their abject, miserable, pathetic little lives, because youll be out of the valleys, and they be pushing prams or working in Tesco still being scared. Im not saying it is ever going to be easy for you, simply because you ARE different, but THEY are the ones who have to deal with that, not you. Said 13yo did EXCEPTIONALLY well NOT to burst into tears, and Ive rarely had a firmer hug, from both ladies..... !3yo went out of the shop with mother trying rather unsuccessfully to hold her on the ground. Job done. One acute judge of human nature did say later last night that creative people ARE different and dont always rub along well with the rest. He also kindly opined that the kind of advice that young lady received from me could be life changing. Im not sure how true that might be - time will tell, but Ive asked both of them to stay in touch.
