Yesterday, I was surprised to read people complaining about the cost of the Skull Leader. Especially considering how much effort I put into keeping the cost down to about half what I normally charge for my handmade custom pieces. HALF. Its a different process and I wont do it for every release... but I digress. At this point in the game Im used to it. The vocal minority. People that are upset that they simply cant afford it at the moment or just have absolutely no understanding of what goes into the manufacturing process. Just make more, it will be cheaper, why dont you make cheaper art?, why do you only cater to rich collectors?... seriously? But then this morning I read this wonderful comment from Tommy Vu: Every time Huck announces a new custom two things inevitably happen. He is praised for the amazing work that he has done and some people complain about the cost. In the past year Ive purchased a number of Huck Gee pieces. A couple 3 dunnies for $12, an 8 skull head for $60, and an 8 Penelope for $200. I will also be buying this piece. That is a wide range of price points where anyone who loves Hucks work can get something. I really love the new Corvette, but for a number of reasons it doesnt work for me and my family, so I get a Camaro. I dont complain about how much the Corvette costs. I know the costs that go into making that car and that the price is justified. I’ve been following Huck’s work for years now, so I’ve got a pretty good idea how much things will cost before he announces the price. But when he announced the price for this one, I was honestly shocked. I was shocked because I expected this piece to cost a LOT more than it does. This piece is 100% custom. There are no off-the-shelf pieces that he can build off of, every single piece is hand made. Not to mention, this thing is huge! I’m going out on a limb here, but I would guess that he is making a lot less per piece than he normally does. I believe that he’s doing this for two reason. 1) He loves his fans. 2) He knows how much everyone wants this piece. To those that can’t afford this piece all I can say is, it sucks. It really does. This is some of Huck’s best work and it would really suck to not be able to get one. So as a fellow fan, I sympathize, just don’t blame Huck for it. Thank you, Tommy.
