Yesterday I went to my second interstate comp in 8 days, GPC - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I went to my second interstate comp in 8 days, GPC Canberra Cup last Sunday and the Sydney Cup yesterday. Great turnout and some strong new faces. Sydney Cup held some personal interest for me, as a lifter I train via email was competing in his first ever meet. Dylan Smouha contacted me around 12 weeks ago for some programming. I dont train clients via email who have no plans on competing. Dylan had picked out the Sydney Cup, so it worked out great. Dylan was going to use wraps, but changed his mine late in the piece, but that wasnt an issue. Our goal of 650kg was going to be a little tougher. I must point out that Dylan was actually a perfect client. Not once did he question anything I set out, and I set out a lot, all weights, exercises, sets and reps. He did everything asked. Meet started well, made 220 squat, then 230, missed 240. Made his benches, ended up on 150kg. That left a 270kg deadlift at 98kg for 650kg. His 255 opener went okay. Hed now wrapped up the win, remember this was a competition first and foremost. Now had a decision, which I left to him. With the win in the bag, he could go 262.5 the 270 or have 2 attempts at 270. He chose the latter. On his 2nd attempt, his first at 270kg, the bar stopped at just over his knees. He was disappointed. I went back into the warm up room with him and explained that whilst he took a sumo stance, he was in fact pulling conventional. As was every other lifter there. I suggested on his 3rd attempt he try and pull 270kg conventional. I think Dylan was a bit shocked. He explained that he had never pulled more than 190kg conventional. So he stepped out and pulled 270kg conventional, so fast to a few inches before lockout. Unfortunately this isnt a fairy tale, and he didnt make the lift. But he pulled it so much better that Dylan will switch to conventional for his next training cycle. Dylan finished the day with 635@98, no wraps, first meet. Looking forward to 2015. Now if only I could get his partner Alicia Hutley to compete……Melbourne Cup maybe? youtu.be/RD5tiSHc2X4
