Yesterday KANIP posted a story about a mom in San Antonio who was humiliated this week while trying to breastfeed her baby at her gym. It made me think of my own humiliating breastfeeding story from Thursday: I got to the gym knowing Monkey needed to eat, but she wouldnt stay latched in the car. I decided to go ahead and try to workout so I brought her in to my clubs childcare facility. I told the young lady that Monkey might get hungry and to come get me if so. If she can hold her own bottle we can feed her here! *eyeroll* I saw that Monkey was already getting restless so I decided to try again to regain hope of having some resemblance of a workout. I plopped down in the chair right there and fed her, cringing, just waiting for someone to say Oh, lordy, think of the children!. Not to mention I was wearing my gym clothes so I had to pull my shirt up and show my stomach. I will breastfeed without a cover all day but I am SO self-conscious about my stomach! She actually finally nursed and I made my way to the locker room. When I got there and I got a glimpse of myself in a full-length mirror and I saw it. A wet spot. A GIANT wet spot opposite the breast I had been nursing on. AHHH! I had nothing to change into, so I sucked it up because I had COME SO FAR! I had to walk with my Scarlet Letter through the entire gym to get to the elliptical. I did my workout, eying the people around me to see if they noticed. I was thankful when I could finally change into my milk-free street clothes. As I walked out I realized that, while I had been mortified, not one person had made any comments. No ugly looks - no one had even given me a second glance. The only person responsible for my humiliation was... me. So, yes, we see stories where moms are made to be humiliated and they are horrible, but no one tells the millions of times that no one even noticed. So when you see a story like that dont forget: people NIP EVERY DAY without incidence! ~Mandi
