Yesterday, September 16, CPT attended a memorial here in Hebron for Hashem abu Maria, a man who had been a peace activist for years and coordinator of Defense for Children International Palestines community mobilization unit. Hashem Abu maria was shot with live ammunition while peacefully participating in a solidarity march, protesting the killing of children in Gaza, in his home village of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron. He was in the front line of the demonstration and was shot at very close range. The memorial counted with the presence of many organizations, the government officials (include Hebrons governor, who gave a speech) and members of the Abu Maria family. It started with a reciting of a sura from the Quran, a video in homage of Hashem Abu Maria, songs chanted by a girls chorus, a representation of his work (protecting children against violations of their rights) and his death, followed by a song chanted in his homage by one of the boys of the play while morning his murder by Israeli forces.
