Yesterday, a very distraught tourist arrived in the research camp to tell us that an elephant was stuck in the mud near Serena Lodge. It was being pushed by the others and at one point flopped over on its side, apparently exhausted. I asked, Are you sure they werent playing? and he said, Oh, no, they had been there for an hour so they couldnt be playing. I got in our research vehicle with a friend and we went off to the area he described. There we found about 20 elephants,consisting of the KB2 family and about 10 bulls of various ages, swimming and playing in a deep pond I actually call the swimming pool. They were having such a great time and clearly didnt want to get out. We watched them for another hour before they finally emerged and started feeding. In all they must have been playing for at least two and a half hours. See the photo album called The Swimming Pool. (The hippos were not amused.) CM
