Yesterday, after the River of Exploding Durians 榴莲忘返s - TopicsExpress

Yesterday, after the River of Exploding Durians 榴莲忘返s screening. I caught NUOC 2030 by Nguyễn Võ Nghiêm Minh (whom I had the pleasure of meeting at Tokyo Film Fest 4 years ago). A Vietnamese film set in the future, where most of the world is submerged under water due to global warming. Its a love story. Its not really science fiction, but more speculative fiction. Its highly atmospheric and beautifully shot. Loved the fact that during Q and A session, the director mentioned how magical realist literature, especially the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, influenced his filmmaking. Its the same for me :) (Did papers on magical realism for my Masters and PhD, Im quite a fan) So yeah, its quite a cool experience, watching a futuristic Vietnamese film. (while its actually shot in contemporary Vietnam, kinda like Godards Alphaville, but with more water :D ) PS: Actor Quy Binh kinda reminds me of Nicholas Tse
