Yesterday afternoon, while driving into Cedar Rapids, I heard the news on the death of Joe Cocker. One of the most distinctive voices to emerge from England, one of the most intense musical artists you could ever watch as he entered his music...letting his body express it however it might...of what he felt through its musicality. His performance at Woodstock will be forever for me...one of the most gut-wrenching visuals of the rock world. Not smashing guitars...or setting them on fire...or jumping from speaker towers...or all the theatrics of live music that try to cover mediocre music. Great backups...classic Beatles tune...and dragging you into the ecstatic of Rock-n-Rolls connection to a generation trying to define itself away from its roots in the greatest spasm of state violence History has ever seen.
