Yesterday, as one of our first steps to grow the economy, we passed the Hire More Heroes Act of 2015 in the House. This important bill addresses a flaw in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) that provided a disincentive to small businesses to hire our veterans. Under the PPACA, the employer mandate requires small businesses with 50 or more employees to provide employer-sponsored insurance or to pay a non-compliance fee for each employee. Veterans who are already receiving coverage through Tricare or through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) were also counted, which provides a disincentive to small businesses to hiring America’s heroes. This legislation removes this disincentive by exempting veterans who already receive health insurance from the count.
