Yesterday in I went for a walk in the market in Padova with Laura. We started our day going for breakfast (pastry and caffe) at Caffe Cavour which won an international culinary award for the best tarte tatin in the world. Needless to say, those of you who know me well, I was curious. Unfortunately they had stopped making it because the apples are not good enough at the moment (rats!). The pistachio creme croissant was good however! We ended the day in a wonderful little vegetarian bistro in Florence run by two guys who love making beautiful food and and a wonderful experience for people and who created a restaurant dining room that doubles as an art and design library! (See the review on Tripadvisor for Brac in Florence.) We ended the day with a vegan chocolate and pear torte with a wonderful texture, fragrant with orange zest and cinnamon. From pastry at dawn to pastry at dusk. A very good day--and in the middle, I was chatted up by a pair of nice boys in white shirts and ties (but no bikes). Yes, Mormon missionaries!! After a nice chat about my Mormon forbears, some of whom built the Temple, and yoga and spirituality (which convinced them they would not get very far with me) I had to bite my tongue to keep from breaking into song (you know which musical) or asking them whether they were wearing the magic underwear.
