Yesterday in a meeting with several people I was reminded of how we can sometimes speak from a perspective of deep understanding on a topic because we have been doing so for so long, and forget that others who dont have that same level of knowledge will just get it. What Ive seen recently is an example of where I have been asked to add value to a small groups growth and development because others have made the assumption that they should just get it (the required tasks that is). So my tips for a happy healthy team where everyone gets it are: 1. Remove jargon and acronyms from your language - not everyone has your level of understanding! 2. Seek to understand, then be understood - find out how people like to take in information. Do they need handouts, to have it drawn our on a serviette for them, or to do it themselves to fully understand. Explain and speak it THEIR way, not yours 3. KISS them - give it to people plain and simple. Sure, give them complex information if you need them to crack the code for the next answer to anti wrinkle injections that wont have a nasty name like Botox, but give it to them step by step. 4. Check their understanding - ask them to repeat back what they understand from you - you may be surprised! 5. Re-inforce that they understand with recognition and send them on their way with a smile! I trust this helps - use this in business and your personal relationships - youll be AMAZED at the results from these 5 simple steps! And, enjoy the weekend!
