Yesterday in the parking lot of Fresh Market in Williamsburg I - TopicsExpress

Yesterday in the parking lot of Fresh Market in Williamsburg I overhead a mild squabble break out in a family of four. I wasnt really paying attention. Then I saw the Dad take aside the young boy, maybe age 8 or 10. He put his arm around the boy said quietly but firmly, That isnt acceptable. Its very important to respect women. That means... and he went on to lay out exactly actions involving ones body and ones voice that arent okay so the boy would understand that this idea of respect wasnt just some abstraction. I couldnt help hearing all this as I and they were both putting groceries into our nearby cars. So then the Dad was alone outside the car for a moment as all other three were already inside, and I turned and said, You are the BEST Dad! I wasnt sure I should even say anything as it clearly isnt my business and normally I dont go around acting as if my opinion would matter to strangers. He looked startled and said Excuse me? Already in for a penny, as they say, so I I said it again, apologized for overhearing (but I was right there, it couldnt be helped), and said THAT was awesome. He broke into the hugest grin. He said he didnt think he was the best Dad but that he did try. It was just one of those nice moments.
