Yesterday marked the 500-day countdown toward the target date to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). That means we still have 500 days to intensify actions to improve the lives of millions and establish a stable foundation for our development efforts beyond 2015. Global action needs to continue to reduce hunger, decrease undernutrition among young children, improve the health of mothers and their children, expand access and use of antiretroviral therapy, provide more support for women’s participation in secure jobs, further increase the number of children who attend primary school, ensure environmental sustainability and much more. Reliable and robust data are critical for devising appropriate policies and interventions for the achievement of the MDGs and for holding Governments and the international community accountable.
