Yesterday marked the start of the Extreme Duty law enforcement - TopicsExpress

Yesterday marked the start of the Extreme Duty law enforcement exploratory program involving Mount View High School students. Deputy Oettinger along with his cadre of instructors from the Sheriffs Office, State Police and Warden Service started the day off with a bang. The introduction to the course included a code of conduct, introduction of 4 (of the days six) instructors, and some videos to show the extreme circumstances encountered by law enforcement officers. The group next travelled to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro to take the physical fitness test to see the level of fitness new police recruits must attain to be considered for employment. This was also a team building exercise where the students were encouraged to motivate each other to give 100%. The courses core values of teamwork, dedication and excellence were promoted from the beginning. Next the students got a feel for what its like to be a police academy cadet. Deputy Oettinger is a former drill instructor from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and was able to provide some good insight to the daily nuances of a cadet at the academy. Today also marked the first day of the new training class, or B.L.E.T.P. (Basic Law Enforcement Training Program) at the academy; which set a serious tone around the academy. After a quick lunch at the academy chow hall, the group headed back to the Mount View Complex for a class in defensive tactics with lead instructor Deputy Cody Laite. This class exposed the students to some of the tactics used by law enforcement officers to subdue combative subjects. Deputy Laite is a top notch instructor and the students enjoyed their time learning from him. Finally, the day wrapped up with two instructors from the Maine Warden Service teaching a class about some of the extreme calls faced by the Maine Wardens. Warden Aaron Cross and Warden Chris Dyer both took time out of their busy schedules to co-teach at the Extreme Duty exploratory. Although the first day was fast paced, it was just an introduction and students were told to prepare to hit the ground running the following day. A special thanks to MELMAC for sponsoring the meals for the day (in the interest of post-secondary education). Another special thanks to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy for allowing the group to use their facility. Instructors for the day were: Trooper Wuthenow Warden Cross Warden Dyer Deputy Laite Deputy Tozier Deputy Oettinger Students: Seth Davis, Jared Taylor, Garth Coleman, Max Tomlin, Ethan Macomber and Eliza Geaghan.
