Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the death of Gene Bartow. As we mourned the passing of one of our states greatest sports legends following his death done of us would have dreamed that three years later we would be fighting to preserve his legacy. Tonight when we gather on the Green at UAB it will not be about the death of Gene Bartow. However, the spirit that Coach brought to and fostered at UAB will permeate our gathering. Rather than mourn we will celebrate the life and legacy of the Father of UAB Athletics. Gene Bartow was a man of vision, a man of principal, a man of integrity and a man of courage. Those traits must be brought forth in all of us who today carry on his work and strife to prevent UAB from crawling back into a shell of obscurity. We must challenge the President, the Chancellor and the Board to represent us with those same characteristics and with a vision that demonstrates the spirit that made UAB great. We cannot allow the weak, the fearful or the spiteful to take UAB off its path toward greatness.
