Yesterday morning I described the time/history proven process of Delay and Distraction that Putin is using to take over the Crimean Peninsula without having to fire a shot. Later in the day yesterday the evidence describing what is actually happening there . . . evidence which fully supports what I said yesterday . . . began to show up in news reports. Putin is going to hold a referendum . . . a vote of the people of Crimea . . . to decide whether or not they want to be part of Ukraine or part of Russia. (Note that they are NOT being given the option of becoming a separate country with their own sovereignty.) While Russia is negotiating with NATO and the UN as to how the referendum should be conducted, a process that will take lots of time, Putins troops are free to consolidate their power in the Crimea, making it very clear to the people of the Crimea that they, the Russians, are in control . . . they will not be leaving . . . and they are making it crystal clear that there will be permanent consequences to anyone who stands against the take over of their country by Russia. By the time a referendum is held, even if it were an honest vote count (which it will not be) the people of the Crimean peninsula will vote overwhelmingly to join Russia . . . at which point Putin will say, What can we do? The people of Crimea have voted to join us, we cannot let Ukraine hold these democratically free Crimeans in slavery . . . we must save them from their oppressors in Ukraine! He will have the perfect pretext to launch a war on Ukraine if they do not agree to his take-over of the Crimean peninsula. All of which will add one more episode to the annals of history that prove that the tactics of Strike First - then Delay and Distract the world while you consolidate your power over those you have attacked - works every time. It worked perfectly for Hitler in 1938 and it is working perfectly for Putin today. It is the exact same tactic, used in the exact same scenario . . . and it is working exactly as planned. Note that Hitler referred to the people of the Sudetenland as though they were a separate country from Czechoslovakia . . . and Putin is referring to the people of the Crimea as though they are a separate country from Ukraine. Note that Crimea is always capitalized as though it is a separate national state from Ukraine. This is a subtle psychological way of describing people who are citizens of a sovereign nation as though they are a separate political entity . . . a separate sovereign nation. An entity that is entitled to hold their own free elections to determine if they want to join another country . . . regardless of the will of the whole country that they are actual citizens of. The questions that NATO and the UN and every other free country should be asking themselves are these: Is it now possible for the people who live in the Crimean peninsula to have actual, free, elections while Putins troops are running rampant in their country? Even if Russian troops totally pulled out of Crimea before the referendum was held, would it be possible to have a truly free and honest election? The answer to both questions is NO, it is not possible. Russian troops have armed political groups within the Crimea to overwhelm all opposition to Russia and for them to disarm and terrorize those who would freely oppose Russia if they were not there. It is no longer possible for a free and honest election to be held in the Crimea . . . Putin ensured that the day he sent his troops in to take over the Crimea. All he has to do now is wait while the people of the free world delude themselves into thinking they are holding an actual free referendum . . . a shame referendum that they can use to soothe their consciences into believing that they have no responsibility to protect the Ukrainian nation from a hostile take over of part of their country. Even BETTER! . . . when Ukraine objects to the phoney results of the phoney referendum, Russia will have the perfect pretext to attack the whole of Ukraine . . . and they will do it proclaiming that they have democratic truth and right on their side . . . they will do it to save the free people of the Crimea from those evil aggressors, the Ukrainians.
