Yesterday morning we gathered in the rain to celebrate the presentation of a special award from the Wildlife Preservation Society of Qld (Brisbane North) and Mountains to Mangroves to Sandgate identity and quiet achiever Laurie Jeays. The Jeays family has been a key part of Sandgates identity since European settlement. Laurie became an environmental activist at a young age when he saw things starting to disappear from our local environment and grasped a clear understanding of how things happening up the catchment can affect us out here on the Bay. Without people like Laurie who fought hard to protect the Boondall, Deagon and Brighton wetlands from development, our area would not be the same. Most recently Lauries been doing the regular beach walks with Andrew to help people explore and understand the importance of our tidal sand flats. Lauries also been a consulting environmentalist for the new Rainbow St mural being created under the direction of local artist Kim Mancini. Laurie went and visited local school students to talk to then about their local natural environment. Thank you Laurie for what you have done and continue to do for our community.
