Yesterday my friend, Jeff Sturges challenged me to write a story - TopicsExpress

Yesterday my friend, Jeff Sturges challenged me to write a story based on his cue. An old hat on the doorstep. This is what I came up with. I am now passing along the challenge to Jim Jones, Tony Norris, Doug Hocking. The rules are simple. You have one hour or so from get to go. the story can be as long, or as short as youd like. I am looking forward to your take on the cue. Michael Erickson Hey Jeff Sturges, Thanks for reminding about that. I need to kind of jump around in time to tell this part but I dont mind. It was an old, wore out grey fedora that my uncle Jon lost in windstorm in late June of 73. In its own mysterious way the wind carried that hat better than 7 miles and laid on the front porch of Pearls house. Pearl had been planning to enter her favorite buck , Bubba, in the annual People and Pets costume parade over in Palominas. Pearl had raised Bubba on a bottle and he was as gentle as could be. At the age of 7 he sported a long white beard and, Pearl had in mind that she would dress him up as a farmer. She had saved a wore out pair of her baby brothers Bibby overalls and, with a bit of work and a lot of imagination she had modified them to fit on Bubba. The costume was just about perfect but she felt that it was lacking something. I can just imagine the look on her face when, much to her surprise and delight, she spied that old grey hat just settin there on the stoop. She grabbed it up and headed out to the barn to feed the stock. All the while plotting how to get that hat to stay on Bubbas head. After breakfast she headed back out to the barn with her 2 blade Barlow pocket knife and some string. A few minutes later she stepped back to admire her handi-work. She had cut holes so the bucks horns stuck out and tied a string around his neck. Two days later Pearl proudly led Bubba down the road. All along the route the people laughed and applauded her and her buddy. All except for Uncle Jon that is. It seems that he recognized his favorite hat and failed to find the humour in the costume. It was bad enough to him that his hat ended up on the bucks head but what really infuriated him was when folks came up to him and remarked as to how much alike he and Bubba looked. Almost twins. Well Pearl and Bubba took first prize that year. And 40 years later that blue ribbon still hangs on the wall in her sewing room.
