Yesterday my mom, Phyllis Nehmer, died at the age of 91 after a long struggle with heart failure. Though the last couple of years were progressively difficult, she never lost her will to live, her feisty nature, her edgy sense of humor or her straight- shooting mode of speech. She kept her mind and didnt stint on telling doctors they were wrong! Over the years she had some fantastic aides at her side who were there at the end, too. It seemed her end was slow but then happened all of a sudden and Im grateful I got home in time. There was a lovely service for her today at Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase, presided over by the warm and caring Rabbi Michael Feshbach, with a special eulogy by Rabbi Emeritus Bruce Kahn. Two rabbis! Mom would have loved that. For anyone in NYC who wishes to do so, drop by Temple Emanu-El Tuesday from 4:30-7:30. Thats where I work, and Ill be having an informal gathering there, courtesy of my lovely and caring colleagues. Id love to tell you about my amazing globe-trotting, schoolteaching, USO singing, grammar-correcting, hilarious mother.
