Yesterday on my way home from work I took a different way, passing through the old neighborhood where my parents grew up and I lived for a little while on the North side of the City on Lodi Street. It was late, around 11 and on the two mile stretch of Lodi and the turn on Court Street I passed two separate fights and someone breaking into a car. The next day driving back to Liverpool to visit my parents I saw 2 different police cars parked in "speed traps" with speed guns pointed at the road. My question is- where are our priorities? Instead of deploying so many officers to catch speeding drivers, why not deploy more officers to monitor known crime hot spots like my old neighborhood? I know there are many people out there who know more about how our police departments work and I welcome their opinions on this, but why not bolster our night patrols in high crime areas to deter crime and begin to rebuild our city? Things are getting worse every year, we can do better than this.
