Yesterday our excursion to the Gaoligong Nature Reserve began. We travelled two hours from Baoshan to the historic staging post of Baihualing (where the caravans along the Southern Silk Road would have rested before and after crossing the mountains). Along the way we stopped at the Nu River (Salween) to inspect the 500 year old Shuanghong Bridge (双虹桥). We then arrived in Baihualing and spent the afternoon examining nearby ecotourism resources. Baihualing is a Chinese Mecca for birdwatchers. In the evening we had an exchange with local villagers and workers from the Nature Reserve. Today we undertake the 19 kilometre hike over the mountains. We begin at 1900 metres and finish on the other side at the same. The high pass is 3200 metres. The weather looks brilliant.
