Yesterday, someone asked what amplifier Kim uses in his home studio -- heres the answer: I use various amplifiers in my studio at home .... Marshall, Ampeg, Fender and Peavey. I know that doesnt help you much. What it does say is that Im not particularly tied to any one amp these days. Sometimes, on the road, I play my best with an amp that isnt perfect because it brings out the creative side of me ....I have to overcome the deficiencies. Finding a tone .... and keeping a tone .... is an ongoing thing with me. Im an emotional player, rather than a technician, and my emotions change like the wind. Thus, my tone changes accordingly. These days, I usually start with a clean sounding amp (therefore, any will do) and then I dirty it up a little with a Tube Screamer. And, Ill use a Wah Wah pedal also. Thats it! Im going back to the cleaner side of my guitar sound, that I have used in the past, so I dont use the overdrives that come with many modern amplifiers. However, from time to time, I will use that, even in the recent past. My thinking, nowadays, is that I tend to play too cliched if I use too much distortion .... at least to my ears. A cleaner sound lets my personality come through better. I have a small Peavey Jet, single twelve inch speaker amp, that used to sound great in the studio, but I had to replace the speaker and now it doesnt sound the same. For the next studio recording, Im not sure what amplifier Ill use. Im getting a good tone these days on various amps and I think what that says is that it ALL STARTS IN THE HEAD .... and not the equipment. Kim Simmonds January 23, 2015
