Yesterday started as an icy, cold and adventurous trip into the Northern Range of Yellowstone Park at about 6:30 AM. I was almost awake. The Lion of March added another 2-3 of snow-pack to the Northern Loop on our way to the Lamar Valley. As always, Lamar provided a new snowscape that was awesome and amazing. We probably passed only 5-6 cards during our entire drive. Luckily, the trusty snow-plow had already cleared our lane heading east. It was a last outing to take a short snowshoe hike for my brother and me before he moved to the big city of Bozeman. Our winter outings have been limited this year due to a bad left Achilles for me this year but physical therapy has me back in shape for an amazing spring ahead. Many of the bison are starting to show the ordeal of winter. Thanks go out to MacNeil Lyons who usual skill and exploits allowed us to see about five of the Junction Butte Wolf Pack resting on a hillside far in the distance from his spotting scope. He also shared the prize of the year for capturing a photo of the first grizzly in the Northern Range fresh out of hibernation. Thanks MacNeil! The sun was bright by noon and it had warmed up to a nice 24 degrees. Chuck Snover and I made an attempt to hike the trail above the Yellowstone Picnic Area but were met with deep powder at the top. Even with snowshoes, we would take a step and sink about 2-3 feet--tough going so as the true adventures we are, we turned back! As always, Yellowstone provides a new adventure with every trip and never disappoints.
