Yesterday, the Michigan House of Representatives passed a religious freedom bill that could allow EMTs to refuse treatment to LGBT* patients, and pharmacists to refuse to refill their HIV medication. Today, we get a shiny new report of the latest of the CIA torture programs abuses. And since this countrys founding, the United States has shown again and again and again that black lives dont matter either. Ive never felt less proud to be American. Ive also never felt less proud to go to Harvard. This Sunday at the die-in for Mike Brown and Eric Garner (where were all the queers BTW?) Reverend Walton told us this simple act of protest was not enough. As Harvard students, he reminded us, we are uniquely positioned to be a powerful part of the solution. And we should be thinking about our studies and our future careers by assessing where we can make the biggest impact. But his voice stands alone among those of this institutions leaders. President Faust couldnt be bothered to write more than four sentences in response and solidarity, let alone inspire any sort of call to action. Harvard, I expect more from you. I expect you to be braver. I expect you to be a leader in this fight, and to teach me how I can exercise my enormous privilege to be the same. America, you are broken in so many ways. With or without the support of this damned school l will join in this INTERSECTIONAL struggle to fix you.
