Yesterday, the White House said it would prefer Congress approve and fund its plan to train moderate Syrian rebels by attaching it to Continuing Resolution (CR) legislation designed to keep the government open past October 1 -- setting up a false choice between funding the government and sufficiently debating an important foreign policy decision. Heres what Democracy for America said in response to the creation of this false choice: Launching an air war and providing $500 million in funding to train and arm so-called moderate rebels in the midst of a complicated civil war are serious decisions that require serious debate and discussion within the U.S. Congress, not a rubber stamp. Its unacceptable to try to jam a plan to train and arm rebel groups that could have long-lasting foreign policy consequences through Congress by setting up a false choice between doing what the President wants right now and funding the U.S. Government. The American people deserve a calm, rational public discussion of the strategy the President proposed last night and straight up or down votes on individual components -- not parliamentary games designed to shut down debate, force the hands of our representatives in Washington, and obscure the very serious undertaking on which theyre voting. -- Neil Sroka, Communications Director, Democracy for America Take action & sign DFAs petition demanding Congress debate and vote on President Obamas ISIS plan -- including the $500 million funding request to arm and train Syrian rebels, below.
