Yesterday there was an excellent post here by Zara Winstone. She wrote about a jerk (and other unsundry names) who cancelled her job offer before she even got started. I am that jerk and while yesterdayss post was cathartic, I think it lack a full picture. I thought I would weigh in only to provide some advice from the employers side that may be helpful to others. I am writing because there were many people in this group that wrote in to give her sound advise and that was encouraging because I turn dowm many, many olim for jobs with us who could really use a bit of hard-to-hear, but solid life advice. Attitude is everything. The individual posting yesterday was not let go because she lacked equipment that the company refused to buy for her (that sounded very dramatic though), but ATTITUDE and that came through on the post loud and clear yesterday. (After reading that post yesterday you can clearly see who you would want on your team, working with you everyday and who frankly, you would not care to ever work with). Business is about problem solving. No problems...no business. So being a great problem solver will likely lead to great things for you. It is true. I extended an offer and when the first problem we encountered arose (with many more to come because thats business) I received an entitled and nasty attitude. I, like her, felt Lets stop this before its too late. If you want a job within a company, any company, be can do. Be the solver. Do you business with a glad heart. Getting a job is like dating and if you are entitled on your first date and thinking about all the things you deserve to receive on the first date, there is not likely to be a second date. Equipment. Our company offers a great work from home, family-first work environment. Meaning you get to stay at home, take care of your family first and then do you work. Our philosophy is if you give your kids a bath and feed them, you will be fully available to work. We have many stay-at-home Moms who work for us (G-d bless them) and we are a key factor in their success as a family provider and they are the core of our success. I say all that because they are responsible for some things as well. Making sure they have the most up-to-date equipment like a solid computer, a printer and scanner, appropriate software and a headset. This is thier investment in their careers. I am sure there are companies that provide this. We dont. Its not right or wrong. Its a decision. We buy books each month for our staff to read. Other companies dont. Again, its all about your attitude when you come to the table that determines whether you will be working as part of a team and for how long. EyeCarePro now employees 23 personnel in Israel and hiring olim is a big part of our mission. We just instituted a bonus program this year and will have a stock program next year. Organizations grow. They learn and they get better. They are never perfect - they are run by jerks like me. But, if your attitude is right, you could jump on board and be one of those people that make the company improve and grow to be something better than they were yesterday. I want to see all olim gainfully employed as that allows us all to stay in Israel for all of the reasons we are here. We are doing our part, but I think many olim are in need of serious employment coaching to understand the competitive nature of the market and in my opinion, attitude trumps skills any day of the week. When I am hiring, I am putting my whole team at risk if I make the wrong decision. LShana Tova
