Yesterday, walking up the valley, the mountains covered with clouds and the stream seemingly more noisy than ever, there was a sense of astonishing beauty, not that the meadows and hills and the dark pines had changed [AYER, CAMINANDO VALLE ARRIBA, (CON) LAS MONTAÑAS CUBIERTAS DE NIEVE Y EL ARROYO QUE PARECÍA METER MÁS BULLA QUE NUNCA, HABÍA UN SENTIDO DE ASOMBROSA BELLEZA, Y NO ERA QUE HUBIESEN CAMBIADO LOS PRADOS, LOS MONTES, LOS OSCUROS PINOS…]. Only the light was different, more soft, with a clarity that seemed to penetrate everything, leaving no shadow [SÓLO LA LUZ ERA DISTINTA, MÁS SUAVE, DE UNA CLARIDAD QUE PARECÍA PENETRARLO TODO Y NO DEJAR SOMBRA]. As the road climbed, we were able to look down on a farm, with green pasture land around it [AL IR TREPANDO EL CAMINO NOS PERMITÍA VER DESDE ARRIBA UNA GRANJA RODEADA DE VERDES PASTURAS]. It was a green meadow, a rich green that is seen nowhere, but that little farmhouse and that green pasture contained all the earth and all mankind [ERA UNA PRADERITA VERDE, DE UN RICO VERDE QUE NO SE VE EN NINGÚN LADO, PERO ESA CASITA DE CAMPO Y ESA VERDE PASTURA CONTENÍAN TODA LA TIERRA Y TODA LA HUMANIDAD]. There was an absolute finality about it; it was the finality of beauty that is not tortured by thought and feeling [HABÍA ALLÍ UNA ABSOLUTA DEFINITIVIDAD: ERA LA DEFINITIVIDAD DE LA BELLEZA NO TORTURADA POR PENSAMIENTO Y SENTIMIENTO]. The beauty of a picture, a song, a building is put together by man, to be compared, to be criticized, to be added up but this beauty was not the handiwork of man [LA BELLEZA DE UN CUADRO, DE UNA CANCIÓN, DE UN EDIFICIO ES DE COMPOSICIÓN HUMANA… SE LA COMPARA, SE LA CRITICA, SUMA, PERO ESTA BELLEZA NO ERA UNA MANUFACTURA]. All the handiwork of man must be denied with a finality before this beauty can be [TODA OBRA DE MANO HUMANA DEBE NEGARSE DEFINITIVAMENTE ANTES DE QUE ESTA BELLEZA PUEDA SER]. For it needs total innocence, total austerity; not the innocence that thought had contrived nor the austerity of sacrifice [PUES REQUIERE (NECESITA) UNA INOCENCIA TOTAL, UNA AUSTERIDAD TOTAL; NO LA INOCENCIA QUE HA IDEADO EL PENSAMIENTO, NI LA AUSTERIDAD DEL SACRIFICIO]. Only when the brain is free of time, and its responses, utterly still, is there that austere innocency [SÓLO CUANDO EL CEREBRO ESTÁ LIBRE DE TIEMPO —Y SUS RESPUESTAS (REACCIONES)—, ABSOLUTAMENTE APACIBLE, EXISTE ESA AUSTERA INOCENCIA]. Woke up long before dawn when the air is very still and the earth waiting for the sun [UNO DESPERTÓ MUCHO ANTES DEL ALBA, CUANDO EL AIRE ESTÁ MUY QUIETO Y LA TIERRA ESPERA POR EL SOL]. Woke up with a clarity that was peculiar and an urgency that demanded full attention [UNO DESPERTÓ CON UNA CLARIDAD QUE ERA PECULIAR Y UNA URGENCIA QUE DEMANDABA TODA LA ATENCIÓN]. The body was completely motionless, an immobility that was without strain, without tension [EL CUERPO ESTABA COMPLETAMENTE INMÓVIL, UNA INMOVILIDAD SIN ESTRÉS, SIN TENSIÓN]. And inside the head a peculiar phenomenon was going on [Y DENTRO DE LA CABEZA ESTABA PASANDO ALGO MUY PARTICULAR (PECULIAR) ]. A great wide river was flowing with the pressure of immense weight of water, flowing between high, polished granite rock [UN GRAN RÍO ANCHO FLUÍA CON LA PRESIÓN DE UN INMENSO PESO DE AGUA, CORRÍA ENTRE ALTA ROCA DE GRANITO PULIDO]. On each side of this great wide river was polished, sparkling granite, on which nothing grew, not even a blade of grass; there was nothing but sheer polished rock, soaring up beyond measurable eyesight [A CADA LADO DE ESTE GRAN RÍO ANCHO HABÍA GRANITO PULIDO, RELUCIENTE, EN EL QUE NADA CRECÍA, NI SIQUIERA UNA BRIZNA DE PASTO; NO HABÍA MÁS QUE PURO GRANITO PULIDO QUE SE ALZABA MÁS ALLÁ DE DONDE ALCANZABA LA VISTA]. The river was making its way, silently, without a whisper, indifferent, majestic [EL RÍO HACÍA SU CAMINO EN SILENCIO, SIN UN SUSURRO, INDIFERENTE, MAJESTUOSO]. It was actually taking place, it wasn’t a dream, a vision nor a symbol to be interpreted [ESTABA OCURRIENDO DE VERDAD, NO ERA UN SUEÑO, UNA VISIÓN NI UN SÍMBOLO QUE TUVIERA QUE INTERPRETARSE]. It was there taking place, beyond any doubt; it was not a thing of imagination [AHÍ ESTABA, TENIENDO LUGAR, FUERA DE TODA DUDA; NO ERA COSA DE LA IMAGINACIÓN]. No thought could possibly invent it; it was too immense and real for thought to formulate it [NO HABÍA PENSAMIENTO QUE PUDIESE INVENTAR ESO DE NINGUNA MANERA; ERA DEMASIADO INMENSO Y REAL COMO PARA QUE LO FORMULARA EL PENSAMIENTO]. The immobility of the body and this great flowing river between the polished granite walls of the brain, went on for an hour and a half by the watch [LA INMOVILIDAD DEL CUERPO Y ESTE GRAN RÍO FLUYENDO (POR) ENTRE LAS PAREDES DE GRANITO PULIDO DEL CEREBRO SIGUIÓ UNA HORA Y MEDIA POR RELOJ]. Through the open window the eyes could see the coming dawn [POR LA VENTANA ABIERTA LOS OJOS PODÍAN VER CÓMO LLEGABA LA AURORA]. There was no mistaking the reality of what was taking place [NO SE This morning, that benediction filled the room [ESTA MAÑANA AQUELLA BENDICIÓN LLENABA EL CUARTO]. It was raining hard but there would be blue sky later [ESTABA LLOVIENDO FUERTE PERO MÁS TARDE HABRÍA CIELO AZUL]. ESTABA TERGIVERSANDO LA REALIDAD DEL EVENTO]. For an hour and a half the whole being was attentive, without effort, without wandering off [POR HORA Y MEDIA EL SER TODO ESTABA ATENTO, SIN ESFUERZO, SIN DIVAGAR].
