Yesterday was Veterans day - its awesome that we honor our veterans and take a day to make sure everyone remembers what our troops have been through to save our feedom, but kind of like Christmas, why does it need to end there - ive been honored with the opportunity to visit our troops in Iraq and Afganistan and it wasnt just fun and games singing for a bunch of guys and gals in cammo at big bases in Bagdad, Kabul, and Kandahar - i can remember several times taking blackhawk helicopters to remote mountain sides - just me and my buddy Bob Depiero - hopping out with nothing but a harmonica - the wind blowing sand so hard all you can see is dust, and realizing when you get drug over to a tent staked down that feels like it could blow away any minute, this is it - heres 8 guys - tired and beat up from the isolation and constant dust and local insurgants shooting at them - this is it - not knowing when they might get back to their family, if ever, or when the next attack might come - were in the bad guys backyard in these situations, at a great disadvantage - these guys and gals smile at us - they are glad to see us, - we talk and sing songs, but most likely tonight it will just be them carrying out the mission - hanging in there - wondering if the folks back home appreciate what they are doing - when we go to sleep tonight lets think of all our folks over there, and over here who serve our freedom - imagine if we lost America - just think about that a second - what would happen then? - who would fill our shoes - who would keep the world turning with some sense of stability - ??? - were not here by accident - were here because brave men and women have dedicated their lives to making sure we stay here - they have lost their families, their arms and legs and eyes and lives to makes sure the world keeps turning in a way that we can live the way we live - I have a KIA bracelet on that i will wear the rest of my life - it bears the name of Jessica Ellis - a 23 year old young Medic i met in Iraq who was killed on her last tour trying to save the lives of our troops hit by IEDs - her father gave it to me - i looked in his eyes and understood Veterans day isnt just Nov 11th - its every damn day of the year - im so proud to be able to broadcast my radio shows on American Forces Networks -i love hearing back from you guys and gals in uniform , but dont worry, ill be back on that chopper before long - God Bless all our troops -thank you so much for everything you do - and God Bless America
