Yesterday was a truly special day. Super special. I spent the whole day at M50 Shanghai, viewing the art, having wonderful chats. I simply adored the work at Island6. I described a lot of it as divinely decadent - sensual, but funny. Again, appealing to my humour, but lovely work, too was Sun Daliangs Allegory of Ass. I loved that Dark Room has darkroom space for hire, together with tuition and loan of film cameras. They carry film stock and serious paper. A generation that is only used to digital can learn the craft of photography. The assistant there was amazed by my stories. I took some wonderful pics myself - but you dont get to see them thanks to FBs copyright theft. I had a wonderful lunch - just noodles, with a little light soy sauce and a little fried scallion on top. Again, proof how simple cooking and high -quality ingredients speak. I will never know how I failed to buy a Vietnamese sculpture. Good deal cheaper than the £38K for a canvas of his that Qiushengxians assistant couldnt understand that I couldnt afford. In the evening I went for a walk along Suzhou Creek, looking at the heritage buildings, most awaiting transformation, some transformed into trendy businesses and the odd shop. Also found the hutong to end all hutongs. Lucky ones had a sink in the street, unlucky, no sink. Hell of a large area. One tiny public loo for everybody. Every place one up, one down - the down being the kitchen. Many ladies were advertising their services on walls. Couldnt quite work out how that could work - presumably, you get to share with husband, kids and tv?!!!! Think a lot of the artists could have made something of that - in fact the hutong in general. Another thing I came upon was the police car pound. Amazing. Jags, BMWs, Mercs, Maserati. All looked like theyd been there for years, uncollected. Shanghai! island6.org/
