Yesterday was another busy day in the DC area. I visited the Museum of American History, which was fascinating. There was so much to see, but after a few hours I reached sensory overload. After that it was off to Arlington Nation Cemetery. 400,000 are buried on the land that once belonged to Robert E. Lee. His house is still there, open four tours and his wife was related to Martha Washington. The Kennedy family is buried directly below. I distinctly remember being in my 7th grade math class and the principle of the school announcing the news of JFK’s assassination over the intercom. It made me both sad and afraid. It was moving to see the eternal flame at the Kennedy family gravesite. Arlington cemetery is so peaceful and beautifully attended to. It seems like a fitting place to honor our dead. I also found the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier a special place. It is guarded 24/7, 365 days a year, rain, snow, cold it makes no difference. The men that do this are so dedicated, it is inspiring. The changing of the guard happened every hour and that is a wonderful choreographed demonstration. I came away from Arlington thinking about my own family members that served in a number of different wars and campaigns and felt humbled. Overall, my visit out East has reinforced what I already know: our country has a very interesting history and I think it is important that we have a sense of it, as we try to map out our future in these complicated and stressful times. I am glad I came here.
